QUICK THOUGHTSDuke Football kicks off the 2025 season under the lights tonight at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on ACCN. It marks Year Two of the Manny Diaz era, and optimism is running high after a strong 9–4 debut campaign under Diaz. All eyes will be on quarterback Darian Mensah, the Tulane transfer brought in to lead the offense. With a big arm and mobility, Mensah is expected to add a new dimension to the Blue Devils’ attack. He’ll be surrounded by an experienced offensive line and a group of receivers looking to take another step forward, making Duke’s offense one of the more intriguing units in the ACC this fall. Defensively, Diaz’s calling card has always been physical, aggressive play, and Duke’s defense is poised to continue that identity. Elon will test them with a balanced offensive approach, but the Blue Devils’ speed and depth on defense should give them a clear edge. WHY THIS GAME MATTERSEven though Elon enters as a heavy underdog, early-season games like this matter for Duke. It’s a chance to build rhythm on offense, work through first-game jitters, and establish the kind of dominance that sets the tone for tougher battles ahead. For Elon, it’s about pride and proving they can compete against an ACC opponent. SCORE PREDICTIONDuke opened last season with a 26–3 win over Elon, and while the Phoenix will arrive in Durham eager to play spoiler, the gap in talent, depth, and physicality is too much to ignore. Expect the Blue Devils to come out sharp, push the tempo, and showcase what could be a much more explosive offense under Mensah. FanDuel currently has Duke as a -33.5 point favorite, with an Over/Under of 47.5. I’m taking the Over, confident that Duke will not only cover but also make a statement in their season opener. FINAL PREDICTIONDuke 41 – Elon 7
I think the Manny Diaz era enters its second chapter with a comfortable win, and if Thursday night is any indication, this could be the beginning of another memorable season in Durham.

After ACC Kickoff back in July — and then a quick hiking escape up in the White Mountains of New Hampshire — I sat down for one last deep dive into every ACC team’s schedule. Armed with my Phil Steele magazine, I went game by game, penciling in W’s and L’s until my notebook looked like a Vegas odds board.
Let’s just say I may have overthought these projections (lol), but that’s half the fun. And now, with Week 1 finally here, I’m ready to roll. If you check out my “fancy paper graphic” photo attached, you’ll notice a few changes from my ACC ballot back in July. Here’s the rundown of my final Duke Report ACC projections for 2025:
This was a fun deep dive, nothing more. If I really knew how this all shakes out, trust me — I’d be in Vegas cashing tickets instead of scribbling on paper. Hope you enjoy the projections — now let’s bring on the season! From Wallace Wade to Wherever: Duke’s Bowl Watch – Preseason / Week 1 College football is finally back, and you know what that means… it’s officially Way-Too-Early Bowl Projection season from Brian Kennedy of Duke Football Talk and myself Freddie of Duke Report. Now, I know these things are polarizing—some folks love them, some roll their eyes—but whether you’re a fan or a skeptic, the projections are here to stay. And let’s be honest: if we could actually predict every bowl matchup with 100% accuracy, we wouldn’t be writing this blog— but Brian and I would be living it up in Vegas cashing tickets at the sportsbook. Freddie Hodges - Duke Report After spending time at ACC Kickoff in Charlotte this July, reworking (and reworking again) my preseason ACC order of finish, and studying Duke’s schedule more times than I care to admit, I’m ready to make my first call of the season. Drum roll, please… I’ve got Duke heading to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte on Friday, January 2nd. Here’s my reasoning: In my season prediction post, I had the Blue Devils finishing 9–3. In my ACC projections, I placed them 5th overall. I’ve also got two ACC teams making the College Football Playoff, with two more finishing 10–2. That leaves Duke and Louisville both at 9–3, and Charlotte feels like a natural fit for the Blue Devils in this scenario. Of course, bowl projections are fluid—especially this early. I fully expect Duke to take care of business against Elon in Thursday night’s opener, but if Week 1 delivers some upsets elsewhere in the ACC, we could see my projection shaken up before Duke’s huge Week 2 showdown with Illinois. Brian Kennedy - Duke Football Talk Duke fans...We have arrived! Football season is back. It was hard going through the slow period of the sports year (IE Summer), but it was worth it as Duke/Elon is upon us. While the Gator Bowl still somewhat stings, the outlook for this 2025 team is quickly making those memories fade away. In comes highly touted Quarterback Darian Mensah, who has shown already, he is ready to lead the Blue Devils on the field. Along with Mensah, the "Stable" of running backs means anyone from Jaquez Moore, to Nate Shephard could be called to run the ball. The wide receiving room is the question mark of the team, as star receivers Jordan Moore and Eli Pancol have moved on to pursue their NFL dreams. Taking their place is Cooper Barkate from Harvard, and Andrel Anthony from Michigan, both of which have already impressed in fall ball. Throw in returning receivers Queso Brown and Samir Hagans, and Mensah has weapons to throw to. I could continue on and on about this team, but that is not why I am here. Freddie has asked me to come back to give my bowl projections for Duke thoughout the season, and I am happy to oblige. Bowl projections are my love, and if you have followed me on twitter, you will know that I have correctly picked Duke's Bowl destination the last 3 years (Along with most other ACC schools) on bowl selection Sunday. With that being said, let's get this season long party started. Barring any setbacks or injuries to this team, you would have to guess that Duke will be putting on their bowling shoes once again. Even with tough hurdles such as Illinois, and a trip to death valley and Clemson, I see this team winning anywhere from 8-10 games, depending on how the chips fall. The first game of the season against Elon is a small tuneup to get ready for the following week, but it will be a good game to see how things are progressing. As far as where I see this team, if all goes right I am going all out and saying Duke FINALLY finds a way to go to the land of the microwavable toaster pastries in Orlando, and the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Buckle up. The first chapter of the season starts now, and I’ll be updating the bowl projections from Brian and myself weekly here at Blue Devils Blog. Week 1 already has plenty of intrigue, and if history tells us anything, there will be twists and turns ahead. Stay tuned!
We’re just a few days away from kickoff as Duke opens the 2025 football season this Thursday night at Wallace Wade Stadium against Elon. After attending ACC Kickoff in Charlotte back in July, I’ve spent a lot of time breaking down Duke’s regular-season schedule and reevaluating my ACC standings projections. Now it’s time to settle on a season record prediction for Duke Report. As always, these are just projections for fun—I promise if I could see the future, I’d be in Las Vegas cashing tickets instead of writing this! But here’s how I see Duke’s range of possibilities: the basement, the mid-level, the ceiling, and finally, my official projection. THE BASEMENTThe absolute floor for this team I think is 6–6, which would still keep Duke bowl eligible, even if just for a lower-tier postseason game. Yes, I can see the possibility of 5–7 given the gauntlet on this schedule, but that would take the wheels completely falling off. With the talent Manny Diaz has in place, a losing season feels unlikely. (And full disclosure—I already grabbed the Over 6.5 wins on FanDuel. I’m betting on Duke to clear that bar.) THE MID-LEVELThe realistic “middle ground” feels like 8–4 or 9–3. This would represent steady progress under Diaz while proving that Duke’s recent success isn’t just a flash in the pan. An 8–4 or 9–3 finish would likely secure a solid bowl bid in the ACC’s mid-to-upper tier. Given the balance of experience and new talent, this feels like the most probable range. THE CEILINGThe dream season? I think 10–2 is a possible ceiling, with an outside shot at 11–1 if everything breaks perfectly. But given the difficulty of Duke’s schedule—including Illinois, Georgia Tech, and Clemson—I’d put the realistic top end at 10 wins. That would put Duke firmly in the ACC’s top tier bowls and potentially in CFP discussions. MY PROJECTION FOR DUKE REPORTAfter plenty of back-and-forth and more schedule analysis than I’d like to admit, I’m locking in 9–3 as my prediction for Duke this season.
Here’s how I see it breaking down: Projected Losses:
Projected Wins:
Add it all up and I’ve got Duke at 9–3—state champs, undefeated in North Carolina, and building serious momentum under Manny Diaz in just his second season. That’s my breakdown of wins, losses, and expectations for Duke Football in 2025. Check back here at Blue Devils Blog and follow along on Twitter @DukeReport for my preseason bowl projection, which I’ll have posted soon. I know I’m a little late posting my ACC preseason ballot — but hey, I was off the grid hiking in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire. Now that I'm back, it's time to get back on the grind and bring you some football content here on Blue Devils Blog and over at Duke Report on Twitter.
Above, you'll see my projected ACC order of finish based on my preseason ballot. But once I got home from vacation, I took a deeper dive into every team’s schedule, strengths, and storylines. And as a result, a few spots in my rankings shifted. Coming soon right here on the blog and on Twitter, I’ll be dropping my final preseason ACC projections — including:
So stay tuned — more football content is on the way as we get closer to kickoff! Duke Football opens the season Thursday night, August 28 vs Elon, and I’ll have plenty more before then to get you ready. Duke fans are in for a treat this evening.
Today, Duke Basketball is opening its doors and inviting fans to a free open practice. Fans will get a first look at the 2025–2026 Blue Devils as they hit the court and prepare for another exciting season. A Full Fan Experience From what we’re seeing on social media, this isn’t just a practice — it’s an event. Expect photo booth opportunities, bracelet giveaways, and a few other surprises sprinkled in. It’s clear Duke is going all in to make this a fun and memorable experience for the fanbase. A Nod to the Past Personally, I love seeing this kind of access. It reminds me of the old Coach K clinics I used to attend — those legendary sessions that gave coaches and die-hard fans a unique inside look at how Duke Basketball operated. For a small fee back then, you’d walk away with insights from the GOAT himself, a Duke polo, and a deeper appreciation for the team’s culture. It was a hidden gem for coaches and true fans. Scheyer’s Spin on Tradition Now, under Coach Jon Scheyer, we’re kind of seeing a modern take on that same tradition. By opening practice to the public, Scheyer continues to build his connection with the Duke community — one that we have seen already that’s open, energized, and ready for the next era. This free open practice isn’t just about basketball — it’s about bringing fans into the journey and getting them excited for the upcoming Duke basketball season. |
